Hypothesis

New Finding

The results in this paper unite the roles of specific protein pairs in homologous genetic recombination: RecO-SSB in E coli; UvsY-gp32 in phage T4 and Rad52-RPA in budding yeast. The RecO or UvsY or Rad52 "mediator" proteins can anneal single-stranded complementary DNA strands bound by the cognate single-strand binding protein (SSB, gp32, and RPA respectively). The authors suggest that during repair of double-strand breaks the single-strand binding proteins (SSBPs) attach to single-stranded ends followed by the mediator proteins which help to displace the SSBPs and are replaced by the cognate strand exchange protein (RecA, UvsX and Rad51).
